The historical capital of the county is Puigcerdà, founded in 1117. Today the town is the most important urban and commercial centre of the region.
Since the enforcement of the Schengen Agreement, the Treaty of Maastricht and the single currency, Cerdanya is undertaking major cross-border projects that make it even more attractive for businesses and investment opportunities.
Puigcerdà offers extensive shopping and entertainment, with the central Carrer Major leading to the renovated Plaça Santa Maria.
